Bitter is the New Black - it could happen to you...

We met last night despite the snowy weather and had a good gum-flap, even discussing the book at one point (!). We found it to be a funny read once you got into it. I think we could relate to her in that she had it all - good job, house, boyfriend/husband, and then it all went to hell pretty quickly. No one ever thinks it could happen to them, but apparently it can. Her self-centred-ness (is that a word?) is pathetic, but she recognizes it, so it was a bit easier to stomach.
The next book we chose is 'After Dark, My Sweet' by Jim Thompson, which is on sale at Chapters for $2 (yes, $2!). It's also a movie from 1990 starring Jason Patric (the hunk from the Lost Boys) and Rachel Ward (The Thorn Birds 'Meggie' - I loved Father Ralph - I bet Cecilia did, too). An easy rental if you can't get through the book. A brief summary of the book:
Ex-boxer Kevin "Kid" Collins is a drifter and an escapee from a mental hospital.
He meets Fay Anderson, a widow, who convinces him to help fix up the neglected
estate her ex-husband left. Her Uncle Bud talks them both into helping kidnap a
rich boy for ransom money, and the ex-fighter must make decisions about his
loyalties and what is right.
Ooo, sounds exciting, no?

Meeting - Monday, January 29, 2007 @ Val's

Hello all! Just a reminder that our meeting is next Monday. 'Bitter is the New Black' by Jen Lancaster is our selection. Let's aim for 7pm at my place, I hope you can all make it. I'll have a list of books to choose from by then, which I will post here. You have access to this site as well, you just have to create a user account - don't be a-scared.
